The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court today scrapped proceedings in a graft case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) against Nobel Laureate Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus and six officials of Grameen Telecom.
A four-member bench led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed delivered the verdict, granting the appeal filed by the accused challenging a previous High Court order.
The appeal was lodged by Dr Yunus and six other Grameen Telecom officials—Managing Director Nazmul Islam, and Directors Ashraful Hasan, Naznin Sultana, Md Shahjahan, Nurjahan Begum, and Professor SM Huzzatul Islam Latifee—after the High Court on July 24, 2024, rejected their plea to dismiss the case.
The Supreme Court had earlier, on October 21, 2024, allowed them to appeal the High Court decision and set April 23, 2025, for the verdict.
Senior lawyer Abdullah-Al-Mamun represented the petitioners, while Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman appeared for the state. Advocate Asif Hasan argued on behalf of the ACC.
The ACC initially filed the case on May 30, 2023, with a charge sheet later submitted naming 14 individuals, including the seven who appealed.
Today’s ruling effectively halts legal proceedings against Dr Yunus and the six others, marking a significant development in the long-running case.
