Speakers at a reception and discussion meeting for students who achieved GPA-5 in the HSC examination in Shariatpur demanded the immediate establishment of a full-fledged university in Shariatpur and the upgrading of the connecting road from the Padma Bridge to the district town into a four-lane highway.
They also called on the government to undertake priority projects for the socio-economic and educational development of the district, citing Shariatpur as a neglected and underdeveloped area.
The reception and discussion meeting, titled "Development of Education Culture and Drug Control," were held at the Model Mosque Auditorium in Shariatpur Sadar Upazila, organised by the educational magazine Biswabidyalaya Parikrama in collaboration with the Narcotics Control Department.
Presided over by Harun Aur Rashid, Editor-in-Chief of Biswabidyalaya Parikrama, and moderated by journalist Miraj Sikder, Central Committee member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party, District BNP President and former MP Alhaj Shafiqur Rahman Kiron attended the event as the chief guest.
The discussion meeting was attended by Rafiqul Islam Azad, former President of Dhaka Reporters Unity, as the chief discussant, and Habibur Rahman Palash, President of the Shariatpur Journalists Association, Dhaka, as the guest of honour.
Professor SM Saidur Rahman, Principal of Naria Government College; Professor Farid Al Hossain, Principal of Majid Zarina Foundation School and College; Assistant Professor Mohammad Shahin Sarkar of Shariatpur Government College; journalist Sheikh Khalilur Rahman; and Md. Monirul Islam, officer at the Shariatpur office of the Narcotics Control Department, spoke at the function as special guests.
In his speech as chief guest, Shafiqur Rahman Kiron said that he has been in regular contact with the relevant government ministries to establish a full-fledged university in Shariatpur. The former MP also mentioned that the authorities are currently working on selecting a suitable site for the university.
The speakers at the event emphasised improving the quality of education, instilling social values, and building a drug-free society.
They said that if the younger generation is given proper guidance, the dream of building a prosperous nation can be realised.
At the end of the event, more than two hundred GPA-5 students from the district were presented with honorary crests and certificates.
