Twenty-seven former members of the erstwhile Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) were released on bail from Kashimpur Central Jail in Gazipur on Wednesday. They were accused under the Explosive Substances Act in connection with the 2009 Pilkhana mutiny.

Jail authorities confirmed the release took place around 10 AM, with relatives receiving the accused at the prison gate.

The bail was granted by Additional Metropolitan Judge Ibrahim Mia earlier this week. In addition to the 27 released, bail has also been approved for 178 other former BDR members linked to the same case.

Kashimpur Central Jail Part-1 Superintendent Mohammad Al Mamun stated that the bail documents reached the jail on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pilkhana tragedy, which unfolded on February 25–26, 2009, left 74 people dead, including 57 army officers, during a mutiny at the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) headquarters.

On November 5, 2013, a Dhaka court sentenced 150 BDR members and two civilians to death and 160 others to life imprisonment in connection with the killings. The High Court upheld the death penalty for 139 of the accused on November 27, 2017.
