Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki spoke at a press conference at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka today.

The government has taken initiatives to launch a special programme from July 1 to commemorate the historic July Uprising, Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki announced on Wednesday.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital, Farooki said while the programme will commence on July 1, the main events will run from July 14 through August 5.

“The key objective of the initiative is to rekindle the spirit of unity that the July Uprising represents for the people of Bangladesh,” he said.

The press briefing was arranged to brief the media on the decisions taken at the day’s Council of Advisers meeting. Farooki added that the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing will share full details about the commemoration programme next Monday.

Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam, also present at the briefing, said nine advisers attended the meeting. He noted that two other major decisions were made.

A committee has been formed to work on the autonomy of Bangladesh Betar and Bangladesh Television, with Education Adviser CR Abrar appointed as its head.

Additionally, another committee has been formed to prepare a formal July Proclamation, responding to long-standing demands from students and the public. The committee will be led by Planning Adviser Wahiduddin Mahmud and will include other advisers. It will work with student groups and political parties to finalise the proclamation before August 5.

Meanwhile, the council has decided to observe August 5 as Student-People Uprising Day, which will be declared a public holiday from this year.

Members of the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing were also present at the briefing.
