Students of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) today blocked Shahbagh, one of Dhaka's busiest intersections to press home their three-point demand.

The demonstration began around 3:30 pm, with students staging a sit-in and protesting recent threats against BUET alumnus and engineer Rokonuzzaman Rokon.

In a statement issued yesterday, the students said the protest was part of their ongoing movement under the banner 'Blockade of Engineers.'

They urged immediate legal action against those responsible for threats and attacks on engineer Rokon and called for the formation of a commission to implement reforms in the engineering employment sector.

The students' three-point demand includes: cancellation of the 33% quota for diploma engineers in 9th-grade government posts, with appointments made solely on merit; abolition of the 100% quota for diploma engineers in 10th-grade posts, opening these positions to all eligible candidates and restricting the use of the title "Engineer" to individuals holding a BSc degree in engineering, with legal action against those misusing the designation.

The road blockade caused severe traffic congestion in Shahbagh and surrounding areas, disrupting the normal flow of vehicles, reports BSS.
