Bangladesh has made a significant leap in the 2025 World Press Freedom Index, rising 16 positions to rank 149th out of 180 countries, according to Reporters Without Borders (RSF), a Paris-based media watchdog.
The country scored 33.71 points this year, a notable increase from 27.64 points in 2024, marking its highest ranking since 2018. For the first time in seven years, Bangladesh has entered the top 150 on the global list, surpassing key regional peers including India, Pakistan, and Bhutan.
India, which was ahead of Bangladesh last year, dropped to 151st place in 2025. Pakistan and Bhutan have ranked 158th and below, respectively. In contrast, Bangladesh has maintained its position behind Nepal, Sri Lanka, and the Maldives.
Observers suggest that the shift in government following last year’s anti-authoritarian protests may have contributed to the improved press freedom environment in the country.
Globally, Norway topped the index with 92.31 points, followed by Estonia, the Netherlands, Sweden, and Finland—continuing the trend of European nations dominating the top ranks.
