No report on Sagor-Runi murder case in 8 years

Dhaka, Feb 10 – The authorities failed to submit a report on journalist couple Sagor and Runi even taking times for 71 times from the court in last eight years of their gruesome killing in the capital. The magistrate court on Monday set another fresh date for March 23 for submitting the probe report as the investigating officer failed to place it before the court.
Sagor Sarwar, news editor of Machranga TV and Meherun Runi, senior reporter of ATN Bangla were killed in their own house at Indira road on February 11 in 2012.
The then home minister Sahara Khatun gave a 48-hour ultimatum to arrest the killers of the journalist couple but the government is failed to even submit the investigation report in the last eight years.
The case of Sagor-Runi murder has also been transferred to different law enforcing agencies for five times during the long span of time.
Assistant director of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) Shafiqul Islam, who took times one after another to submit the report on the killing, told media that the investigation is at final stage now.
He also expressed his hope that he would be able to submit the report soon before the court.
Saleha Monir, mother of Sagor expressed her frustration over the delay process of the case saying that the trial of Sagor-Runi depends on the willingness of the government.
She alleged that those were implicated in the case and arrested were not involved in the killing.
Of the eight accused in the case, two are in bail and the rest six are in jail now. None of them confessed their involvement in the killing. RAB so far interrogated 158 people in this connection.
Meanwhile, Dhaka Reporters Unity will stage a demonstration at its premises at 11:00 am on Tuesday demanding the quick trial of the Sagor-Runi killers. – Staff Reporter
