Russia’s envoy to the IAEA rejects US call for Iran to abandon nuclear programme

Russia’s envoy to the IAEA, Mikhail Ulyanov, has rejected US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz’s call for Iran to abandon its nuclear programme.


“Iran is not obliged to abandon its nuclear programme. It is Iran’s inalienable right,” Ulyanov wrote on X.

He also accused the Trump administration of basing its position on “wrong assumptions” about non-proliferation norms and the work of the IAEA.

Ulyanov was responding to Waltz’s comments that Iran had “broken the rules” and was enriching uranium to 60 percent with “no credible civilian purpose”.
