Bangladesh suffer defeat to Georgia

Dhaka, 24 Sept - Bangladesh's open team suffered a 3.5-0.5 defeat to Georgia in the sixth round of the 46th FIDE Chess Olympiad, currently being held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

In the seventh round, played on Wednesday last, Grandmaster Niaz Murshed was the only Bangladeshi player to secure a draw, against Georgia's Grandmaster Baadur Jobava. International Master Mohammad Fahad Rahman, International Master Manon Reja Neer and FIDE Master Sakline Mostafa Sajid lost their respective games to Georgia's Grandmasters Mikheil Mchedlishvili, Nikolai Kacharava and Luka Paichadze.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh's women's team recorded an impressive 3-1 victory over Hong Kong in their seventh-round encounter.

Women International Master Wadifa Ahmed and Woman Candidate Master Nusrat Jahan Alo secured wins for Bangladesh against Hong Kong's Women FIDE Master Kannappan Sigappi and Fan Wen Shi, respectively.

Women FIDE Masters Noshin Anjum and Warsia Khusbu drew their games against Hong Kong's Woman Candidate Masters Liu Tian Yi and Liang Hoi Ting respectively. Following seven rounds, both Bangladesh's open and women's teams have accumulated eight points each.BSS
