Durbachara school retains national girls’ handball title

Dhaka, 9  Oct – Durbachara Bahumukhi Secondary School of Kushtia emerged unbeaten champions in girls’ handball at the 53rd National Summer School Sports Competition, retaining their national title with an impressive run of victories.

Representing the Golap region, comprising Khulna and Barishal divisions, Durbachara defeated Mankone High School of Padma region comprising Dhaka and Mymensingh division by 32-3 goals in their final league match held at the Ispahani Cantonment Public School and College ground in Cumilla on Friday.

Tahsina Akter and Farzana Akter Nidhi were the leading scorers for Durbachara, netting eight goals each.

Durbachara also won the girls’ handball title at the 52nd edition last year, making it back-to-back national championships for the school.

The team’s success followed a dominant campaign through the preliminary stages. They first became Kushtia district champions, then defeated Narail 21-2 in the sub-regional final in Khulna to win the regional qualifying round. They subsequently beat hosts Barishal 20-2 to qualify for the national finals in Cumilla.

Durbachara Sports teacher Md Saidul Islam Sayeed has been instrumental in developing the team. 

He said: “I saw the girls’ determination and desire to do well, and that inspired me to keep working with them. I am delighted to see the results of those efforts,” Saidul Islam said. “I hope they will one day represent Bangladesh and bring honour to the country.”

Earlier, the final round of the 53rd National Summer School Sports Competition began on October 6 at the Shaheed Dhirendranath Datta Stadium in Cumilla, under the overall management of the Cumilla Education Board. The competition features secondary-level students from Grades Six to Ten.

The tournament is organised by the Bangladesh National School, Madrasa and Technical Education Sports Association, which divides the country into four regions: Bokul, Champa, Golap and Padma.

Youth and Sports State Minister Md Aminul Haque is scheduled to distribute prizes among the winners’ Saturday. BSS
