Pharmacy owners go on strike

Drugstore owners kept their shutters down across the country on Thursday to press home their eight-point demand, including the release
of their fellowmen arrested on charge of selling fake and date-expired medicines.   Pharmacies at different parts of the capital, including Mitford, Shantinagar, Malibagh, and Shahbagh areas, were found closed
since Thursday morning. The shutdown will continue till 10 pm today.
Similar reports also reached the UNB news desk from Chittagong, Sherpur and Natore districts.   Earlier on Monday, the drugstore
owners sent a letter to the Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA) demanding that their demands be met by Wednesday.   They also
threatened to keep their shutters down across the country from Thursday morning if their demands were not met by the time. As their
demands went unheeded, Bangladesh Chemist and Druggist Association enforced the strike.   Their other demands include publishing the
names of illegal drugs and companies, giving back money to the shop owners who were penalised illegally, giving the list of illegal
medicines to Bangladesh Chemists and Druggists Association.
Recently, a mobile court of Rapid Action Battalion (Rab) in a drive sealed some pharmacies and seized huge fake medicines and panelised
several pharmacies in the city’s Midford Hospital area. – UNB
