Committee to be formed for reforming police: Home Adviser

DHAKA, Sept 9 - Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury today said a committee will be formed soon for reforming police force.

"It (police reform) is still at primary level. No committee has been formed in this regard till now. But a primary committee will be formed to reform police soon," he said while an eight-member team of UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) led by Bangladesh Resident Representative Stefan Liller at his secretariat office here.

During the discussion, they discussed on different issues including police reform and rehabilitation of flood affected people, said a release here.

Jahangir said after accepting the recommendations and opinions of the preliminary committee, the process will be taken forward and the next course of action will be determined. At that time, formal discussions with UNDP and other interested countries will be held and their views and suggestions will be accepted, he added.

However, he said only those opinions and suggestions which are relevant in the context of Bangladesh will be considered for further action and implementation.

Liller said police reform in Bangladesh should be done in such a way that people can gain trust and confidence in the police and not be criticized.

He also said that the United Nations is ready to provide necessary technical and financial support in this regard.

In the meeting, the resident representative said that UNDP is conducting a study on flood rehabilitation in Bangladesh. Moreover, the meeting was informed that USD one billion will be spent on behalf of UNDP. - BSS News
