Khagrachari, Oct 01 - Violence broke out  in the district town after a teacher of Khagrachari Technical School and College was beaten to death on charge of raping a girl of indigenous  community on Tuesday.

Local administration imposed Section 144 to calm the situation.

The victim was identified as Abul Hasnat Muhammad Sohail Rana, the chief instructor of the building construction and safety department of the institution.

Abdul Baten Mridha, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Khagrachari Sadar Police Station, said that a remour was spread that the teacher, Sohel Rana ,raped a girl student.

Following the allegation, he was mercilessly beaten inside the institute for some time around 1:30 pm.

He was rushed to Khagrachhari Adhunik Hospital where he was declared dead at around 2:00 pm, the OC said.

Following his death, clashes erupted between Bengalis and tribal communities in the town, leaving at least 15 people, including five police men, injured, the OC added.

Local sources said that several years ago, a case was filed against Sohel Rana for allegedly sexually harassing a tribal female student.

Sohel Rana was acquitted in that case as the plaintiff confessed to the court that she was forced to lodge the false case.

When contacted, Deputy Commissioner of Chagrachhari district Mohammad Sahiduzzaman told UNB that section 144 of CrPc has been imposed in the district town following the death of teacher Sohel Rana.

Replying to a question, he said that he was not confirmed whether the teacher was beaten by only tribal students. - UNB
