A man was arrested with 8,000 yaba pills at a Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) checkpost in Dhaka’s Uttara on Monday.

The operation took place at a special checkpoint established by the DMP's Uttara East Police Station near the Polwel Carnation Shopping Complex, situated on the eastern side of the highway leading from Dhaka to Mymensingh.

The arrested individual, identified as Md. Jamal Hossain, 49 was detained during a routine search at approximately 5:20 pm. Police officials reported that a school bag on Hossain's back was inspected, revealing 40 blue polythene bags containing the light pink yaba pills.

In addition to the drugs, authorities seized Tk 8,000 in cash and two mobile phones from the suspect's possession.

According to police records, Hossain has a previous criminal history, including a drug case filed at the Bakalia Police Station in Chattogram, as well as charges of theft and extortion in Barisal. He also faces two cases under the Special Powers Act in Vola and one in Pirojpur.

The DMP initiated these special security measures at various key locations throughout the city to enhance law and order, following directives from Commissioner Md Mainul Hasan PPM, NDC. The checkpost operations are set to continue until further notice, as authorities aim to curb drug trafficking and maintain public safety in the metropolis.

A case has been registered against Jamal Hossain under the Narcotic Control Act at the Uttara East Police Station, and investigations are ongoing.
