Former Speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar passes away

Veteran politician, former acting President and former Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad, Barrister Jamir Uddin Sircar, passed away early Sunday. He was 91.

His youngest son, Nawfel Jamir, announced the news in a Facebook post, saying Jamir Uddin Sircar breathed his last around Fajr prayer on Sunday (July 12 Bangladesh time).

A standing committee member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jamir Uddin Sircar served the country in several key constitutional positions during his long political career. He was widely respected for his parliamentary experience and contributions to democratic politics.

Born on December 1, 1931, in Nayabari village of Tetulia upazila in Panchagarh district, Jamir Uddin Sircar had a distinguished political career spanning several decades. He served as Speaker of the Jatiya Sangsad on two occasions and also twice assumed the responsibilities of Acting President of Bangladesh.

Jamir Uddin Sircar is survived by two sons, one daughter, grandchildren, relatives and a large number of admirers and well-wishers.
Details of his funeral prayers and burial were yet to be announced.
