LGRD and Cooperatives Minister and BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has urged people to become more aware of their responsibilities as citizens, saying the government alone cannot do everything in a country of 200 million people.

"Every person should be aware and develop himself as a citizen. If I am not a citizen and do not fulfill my responsibilities, it is not possible for the government to do everything," he said.

The minister made the remarks while exchanging views with the management committee of the 250-bed Thakurgaon General Hospital on Monday afternoon.

Mirza Fakhrul said the government is working sincerely to address various issues, including the protection of women and children and prevention of drug abuse. He said laws have been amended and stricter measures, including the death penalty, have been introduced to curb serious crimes and drug-related offences.

He said Thakurgaon General Hospital has been modernized, with its capacity increased from 250 to 670 beds.

The authorities will identify the hospital's remaining shortcomings and take necessary steps to address them, he added.

The minister also said development projects that were planned to be implemented with China's assistance would be carried out gradually. A team of students has already been selected and will visit Thakurgaon after returning home, he said.

Thakurgaon Deputy Commissioner Rafiqul Haque, Superintendent of Police Belal Hossain, Hospital Superintendent Dr Firoz Zaman Jewel, District BNP General Secretary Poygam Ali and others were present at the meeting, reports BSS.
