Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Major (retd) Hafiz Uddin Ahmad has described former prime minister Sheikh Hasina as the “world’s best actress” and alleged that she herself had ordered enforced disappearances.

He made the remarks while speaking as the chief guest at a discussion meeting organised by members of civil society at the Lalmohan upazila auditorium in Bhola around 11:30am on Saturday.

The Speaker said testimonies and evidence presented before the International Crimes Tribunal had made it clear to the public that Hasina was allegedly behind enforced disappearances.

He alleged that Hasina used to invite the relatives of disappeared individuals to Ganabhaban, console their wives and children by placing her hands on their heads, and assure them that their loved ones would be returned.

“However, she herself knew where the disappeared people were,” Hafiz said.

He said Hasina’s conduct and apparent performance had made her “the world’s best actress,” although the public had not understood the situation at the time.

The Speaker also referred to the alleged detention of a barrister in the so-called “Aynaghar” facility for eight years while being kept in handcuffs, describing the treatment as cruel and disgraceful.

Hafiz further alleged that Hasina, whom he described as a notorious leader of the Awami League, had fled the country. He claimed that several people who had held important positions during the previous 17 years had also left the country, including a judge and the imam of Baitul Mukarram National Mosque.

Local BNP leaders, including Lalmohan upazila BNP President Md Zafar Iqbal, General Secretary Shafiqul Islam Babul and Upazila Jubo Dal President Shajinur Islam Kabir Hawladar, attended the meeting.
