Former interim government chief adviser Muhammad Yunus faced angry questions from a section of Bangladeshi expatriates at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York on Monday, October 12.

In a video circulating on social media, a man can be heard accusing Yunus of killing thousands of children and police officers, making arrests in Bangladesh and undermining democracy.

Yunus had arrived at the airport from Doha on a Qatar Airways flight.

Some people present questioned why he had come to the United States, raising allegations of arrests in Bangladesh, the killing of police personnel and the destruction of democracy.

“You are a terrorist. You have killed people in Bangladesh. Why have you come here? Tell us why you are here,” the man says in the video.

At another point, he alleges that 200,000 people had been arrested in Bangladesh and that thousands of police officers had been killed. He also accuses Yunus of destroying democracy in the country.

However, the identities of the people involved and the full circumstances of the incident could not be independently confirmed. No statement from Yunus or his representatives was available regarding the incident.

Yunus took charge as head of the interim government on August 8, 2024, following the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government amid a mass uprising.
