Awami League (AL) General Secretary Obaidul Quader today urged BNP to discard the demand for restoration of the caretaker government system ahead of the upcoming general elections.

“The caretaker government (system) has been sent to the museum by a court order. Reviving a dead issue is unconstitutional and irrational. We don't want the caretaker government system and the people don't want it too,” he told a rally here.

He said the BNP must now throw away the ghost of the caretaker government from its head.

Dhaka North City unit of Awami League (AL) arranged the rally at Mirpur No. 1 Eidgah ground in the capital on the occasion of the historic Homecoming Day of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.

Quader, also the road transport and bridges minister, said the next parliamentary elections in Bangladesh will be held in the same way the polls are being held in other democratic countries of the world.

He said the government will only accomplish its routine duties during the elections. “Sheikh Hasina will remain the Prime Minister during the election period. The government will not interfere in the polls.”

About BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir's allegation that BNP leaders and activists were attacked in different parts of the country, Quader said the allegation of Fakhrul is totally false.

“The allegation of attacks on BNP men in Mymensingh and Faridpur is false. Mirza Fakhrul has given wrong information. On the contrary, the police were attacked from the programmes of BNP,” he said.

AL presidium member and Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzaque, AL Joint General Secretary and Information and Broadcasting Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, AL Relief and Social Welfare Secretary Aminul Islam Amin, State Minister for Industries Kamal Ahmed Majumdar, Sadek Khan, MP, and Freedom Fighter Aga Khan Mintu, MP, among others spoke.

AL North City unit president Bazlul Rahman presided over the rally while its general secretary SM Mannan Kochi moderated it, reports BSS.
