Famed student leader, MP Nur E Alam Siddique passes away

Dhaka, Mar 29 - Nur E Alam Siddique, convener of Swadhin Bangla Kendriya Chhatra Sangram Parishad and former president of Bangladesh Chhatra League (1970-1972), is no more. He was 82.

The former Member of Parliament passed away at 4:37 am today while he was under treatment at the United Hospital in capital Dhaka, confirmed his press secretary Aniket Rajesh.

Noor-e-Alam Siddiqui played an active role in all the political activities of his time, including participation in the six-point movement and Language Movement. He was a leading member of the Swadhin Bangla Chhatra Sangram Parishad in 1971. Siddique was one of the leaders of Mujib Bahini. He was elected MP from Jashore-2 constituency as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League in the first parliamentary election of 1973.

He contested from Jhenaidah-2 constituency as a candidate of Bangladesh Awami League in the 7th and 8th parliamentary elections of 1996 and 2001.

When Awami League was divided in 1976 into Malek Ukil and Mizan factions, Nur E Alam Siddique sided with the Mizan faction. He deserted the party after its leader Mizanur Rahman Chowdhury joined the Ershad government following the military takeover of March 1982. He did detach himself from politics for quite some time and engaged himself in business activities. Until his death he was the chairman of the Doreen Group. 

Born on 26 May 1940 in Jhenidah, completed his Master’s degree in three disciplines (Political Science, Bengali literature and History) from University of Dhaka. He was also enrolled as an advocate and a member of Supreme Court Bar Association.
