Law enforcers ready as GCC polls Thursday

All preparations have been taken ahead of Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) polls set to be held  Thursday (May 25). Members of law enforcement agencies are ready to hold a fair election.

A total of 13,000 members of law enforcement agencies will be deployed in Gazipur centering the election.

Duties were distributed among the law enforcers during a briefing at Shaheed Barkat Stadium in Gazipur on Wednesday (May 24) morning.

Ruling Awami League candidate Azmat Ullah and independent candidate Zaida Khatun are vying for the mayoral post.

Zaida Khatun is the mother of Gazipur City former mayor Jahangir Alam whose candidacy was scrapped for bankruptcy.

Vote cast will be held at 480 polling centres.

The commission is sending poll materials to the centres Wednesday.

The government has announced a general holiday in Gazipur on Thursday following the voting. 

Earlier, on April 3, the Election Commission announced the schedule for Gazipur, Rajshahi, Sylhet, Khulna and Barisal City Corporation elections.
