Law Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul

Law Affairs Adviser Dr. Asif Nazrul stated on Tuesday that the fate of the Awami League and its 14-party alliance in the upcoming national elections rests in the hands of the Bangladeshi people.

Speaking to reporters following a meeting with United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk, Nazrul emphasized the importance of public opinion in assessing the eligibility of parties facing serious allegations of human rights violations.

“It is ultimately for the people to decide if a party, which has shown no accountability for its actions, should be permitted to contest elections without first facing justice,” he remarked in response to questions regarding the Awami League’s standing.

Nazrul also asserted that a fair trial must precede any definitive ruling on the party’s election eligibility, reinforcing the need for justice before political considerations.
