Local Awami League leader held in Meherpur

Police have arrested a local Awami League leader in a case filed over attacking students of anti-discrimination movement in Gangni of Meherpur.


Firajul Islam,45, General Secretary of the Bahagunda Union’s Ward No. 2 branch of the Awami League in Dhankhola Union was held on Tuesday night, Gangni Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bani Israil said.

The case was filed by Rezanul Haque, a resident of Chowgacha village under Gangni Municipality, accusing 37 named individuals and 100 unidentified persons. The charges were brought under sections 6(2), 7(5), 7(6)(a), 7(6)(b), 10, 11, 2, and 13 of the Anti-Terrorism Act 2009 (Amendment 2012). The case was registered with Gangni Police Station as Case No. 11, on August 20, 2024, reports UNB.

Investigation officer of the case Sub-Inspector Nikhil Chakraborty said Firajul will be taken to court around 11 am on Wednesday.
