Senior BNP leader Lutfozzaman Babar, former state minister for home affairs, was released from Keraniganj Central Jail today (16 January) after serving 17 years in prison. He was acquitted in all cases against him, including charges related to the infamous 10-truck arms haul.

Babar, dressed in a crisp white panjabi, was greeted with garlands and cheers from supporters as he walked out of jail. Many showered him with flowers while he smiled and waved to the crowd.

AIG Prisons (Development) Jannat Ul Forhad had earlier confirmed Babar's expected release in the afternoon, prompting a large crowd of family members and party activists to gather outside the prison.

“We are overjoyed. Our leader has been freed after suffering under the [former] fascist government,” one supporter expressed. Another added, “No MP has endured the injustice and torture Babar faced. We pray for his return to restore normalcy.”

Babar, who was arrested on 28 May 2007, is expected to head to his home in Netrakona after his release.

His freedom follows recent legal victories. On 14 January, the High Court acquitted him in the 2004 Arms Act case related to the 10-truck arms haul in Chattogram. Earlier, on 18 December, Babar and five others were acquitted in a case under the Special Powers Act. Additionally, in October, he was cleared of an 8-year sentence in a corruption case, and in December, he was absolved of charges in the 21 August grenade attack case, where he had previously been sentenced to death.

Babar had been convicted in several cases over the years, including two death sentences and a life sentence. However, following the fall of the Awami League government and subsequent appeals, these convictions were overturned, paving the way for his release.
