Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus
In an exclusive interview with NHK World, the international service of Japan's public broadcaster, Yunus highlighted the significant progress made since the interim government's formation. Reflecting on the state of the country when he took charge, he remarked, "When we came in, the nation was in a state of devastation—its society, economy, political system, and judicial system were all shattered."
He emphasized the importance of the upcoming election as a pivotal moment for the country to restore its democratic processes. Yunus stated that the earliest possible date for the vote would be at the end of this year, adding that it would lay the groundwork for a government equipped to function effectively.
"The new government that will emerge from this election will have a very safe and sound basis to work with," Yunus explained.
The Nobel Peace Prize laureate expressed his commitment to ensuring Bangladesh emerges stronger, highlighting the role of the country’s youth in shaping its future. "Young people will play an influential role going forward. They will harness their creativity and share it with the world. This is the ambition we hold for the future," Yunus said.
He also conveyed his gratitude toward Japan, the country’s largest development partner, noting its contributions to technology, investment, and job creation for young Bangladeshis.
Yunus spoke to NHK in the capital on Wednesday, discussing his vision for Bangladesh's recovery. The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina-led administration collapsed in August, following student protests after 15 years in power, as reported by NHK.
After the uprising, Yunus was appointed Chief Adviser of the interim government. During a televised address to the nation on December 16, he indicated that the next national election could be scheduled between the end of 2025 and mid-2026.
