A mob vandalised and set fire to the house of former Narail-1 member of parliament (MP) Kabirul Haque and the Kalia Upazila Awami League (AL) office on Friday.

According to locals, at around 4:30 pm, BNP and its affiliated organisations staged a protest rally and held a road meeting at Kalia Bazar. Shortly after the gathering ended, a group vandalised the Awami League office and set it ablaze.

Later, the house of ex-MP Kabirul near the Dak Bungalow was also torched.

Kalia Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Rashdul Islam said that firefighters were working to douse the flames and that the situation was currently under control.

In response, Kalaya Upazila BNP General Secretary SM Wahdiuzzaman denied any involvement of his party, saying, "When the Awami League office was vandalised and the fire broke out at his house, our meeting had already ended. We do not know who was responsible for the attack."

The incident comes a day after widespread vandalism in Narail. On Thursday, protesters reportedly demolished six structures, including murals of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and memorials of the Language Movement and the Liberation War, reports UNB.
