A case has been filed against 35 Awami League leaders, including former MPs Sheikh Helal Uddin and Sheikh Sarhan Naser Tonmoy, over their alleged involvement in an attack on students during the July-August protests.

Md Rafiqul Islam Mithu, a businessman, lodged the case on Saturday with the Fakirhat Police Station, naming 35 individuals and 50-60 unnamed suspects, said officer-in-charge SM Alamgir Kabir.

Former Bagerhat superintendent of police, Abul Hasnat Khan, was arrested in connection with the case.

Other accused individuals include Bagerhat district AL president Sheikh Kamruzzaman Tuku, general secretary Bhuiya Hemayet Uddin, Fakirhat Upazila AL president Swapan Kumar Das, Bagerhat mayor Khan Habibur Rahman, and several local leaders.

The case alleges that on August 4, the accused blocked the road at Katakhali Golchattar in Fakirhat upazila, destroyed property, and attacked students with bombs and gunfire.

Abul Hasnat Khan is also accused of playing a role in the assault on the students.

All accused were presented in court on Sunday.
