The BNP has demanded that India return Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to Bangladesh for prosecution, following what they describe as her involvement in mass killings during the July-August 2024 protests, as outlined in a UN fact-finding report.

BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir made the demand during a press briefing at the party's Gulshan office on Thursday, after meeting Acting British High Commissioner James Goldman.

“We thank the UN fact-finding committee for its report, which confirms that the killings were orchestrated by one individual—Sheikh Hasina, a fascist leader,” Fakhrul said. He went on to allege that the report revealed Hasina’s role in mass killings, human rights abuses, and the destruction of Bangladesh’s democratic institutions.

“It has been proven that Hasina tortured, persecuted, and killed the people of this country,” Fakhrul continued. "We now call on the Indian government to immediately return Hasina and her accomplices to Bangladesh for trial. This is our demand."

Fakhrul expressed his party’s relief that the truth about the events had been revealed through the UN report. "When the UN speaks, it is universally believed, but when we, the political parties, speak, many doubt us. We are grateful to the UN team for their investigation and findings."

The UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) released its Fact-Finding Report, titled Human Rights Violations and Abuses Related to the Protests of July and August 2024 in Bangladesh, on Friday.
