BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman
BNP acting chairperson Tarique Rahman pledged on March 16 that if his party comes to power, it will ensure trials for those responsible for the killings and tortures during the anti-autocratic movement and the July 2024 mass uprising.
“We can confidently say that if the people of Bangladesh entrust the BNP with governance, we will guarantee trials for every instance of killing and oppression,” Tarique stated in a virtual address during an Iftar Mahfil at a city hotel.
He emphasized that the BNP would work relentlessly, alongside political movements, to ensure justice for those who suffered during the anti-autocratic protests and the 2024 uprising. He promised that efforts would be made to hold accountable those responsible for repression and killings during these turbulent periods.
The event, organized by Amra BNP Paribar at Lakeshore Hotel, was dedicated to the families of victims who endured enforced disappearances and violence during the "fascist" Awami League regime, as well as to the martyrs of the 2024 mass uprising. Eid gifts were distributed to these families as part of the ceremony.
Tarique also expressed his party's and the nation’s hope for free and fair elections, in which the people of Bangladesh will decide who should govern the country.
He stressed that regardless of which party prevails, a comprehensive program must be implemented to deliver justice for the victims of torture and oppression.
“The trials must be conducted impartially, without compromise. If we fail to bring the past injustices to trial, if there is no fair and thorough investigation, we risk allowing such wrongdoings to recur,” he cautioned.
Tarique Rahman urged the victim families to stay hopeful and resolute. "If we unite and raise our voices against injustice, we will undoubtedly succeed in holding those responsible accountable on this very soil," he assured.
