Fakhrul made these remarks after paying homage to the grave of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar in Dhaka. He stressed that BNP's demand for an election is not about seeking power, but to protect the nation's independence, sovereignty, and future.
"We have consistently called for a clear roadmap for holding a general election. This will ultimately resolve all crises," he said. Fakhrul also expressed hope that an interim government would soon implement necessary reforms and announce an election date.
Earlier, several thousand BNP leaders and activists, led by Fakhrul and Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas, gathered to pay tribute at the grave of Ziaur Rahman, the founder of BNP. Senior party leaders, including members of the BNP Chairperson's Advisory Council, also attended the ceremony.
Following the tribute, the leaders participated in a special prayer for the eternal peace of Zia’s soul. Leaders and activists from various BNP-affiliated organizations, including Jubo Dal, Swechchhasebak Dal, and Chhatra Dal, also laid wreaths at the grave.
Fakhrul also conveyed greetings to the nation on Independence Day, on behalf of BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia and Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman. He paid tribute to those who sacrificed their lives for the country’s independence under Ziaur Rahman's leadership.
He remarked that Bangladesh's independence came through immense sacrifice, with countless lives lost. Fakhrul noted that while the country gained independence 54 years ago, the aspirations of the Liberation War remain unfulfilled. "We still haven’t built Bangladesh in line with the spirit of the great Liberation War," he added.
