BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Friday accused the interim government of sowing confusion over the national election by issuing contradictory statements, similar to the rhetoric of ousted autocratic leader Sheikh Hasina.

"We observe attempts to create confusion about the election—whether it's December, June, or March. They are making different statements at different times, which mirrors some of Sheikh Hasina’s past remarks," Rizvi said.

He made these comments while distributing Eid gifts to rickshaw-van pullers and auto-rickshaw drivers on behalf of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman at the party’s Nayapaltan office.

Rizvi called on the government to end the confusion by announcing a clear, fixed date for the election rather than continuing with inconsistent statements.

The BNP leader also criticized those claiming the movement was not solely about holding the national election. "The movement was launched because Sheikh Hasina failed to ensure free and fair elections. She turned the country into a battlefield to hold onto power," he said.

Rizvi reminded that the interim government was formed following a major movement, which saw countless sacrifices. While the interim government was not directly elected by the people, he argued it enjoys widespread public support due to its role in the anti-fascist movement.

Rizvi urged the interim government to resolve the election confusion to maintain public confidence.

He also expressed concern over the unpaid wages and bonuses of garment workers, criticizing the government for failing to ensure workers received their salaries before Eid. "It is the government's responsibility to ensure that workers are paid their wages and bonuses on time, so they can celebrate the festival with their families," he stated.

Rizvi also highlighted the tragic loss of 17 rickshaw-pullers during the July-August movement, urging the government to support their families. "The families of those who died in the anti-fascism movement should not be left to suffer. The government must ensure their children receive an education and provide jobs for those eligible."
