BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on Tuesday voiced optimism that the return of party chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia will reinvigorate efforts to restore democracy in Bangladesh.

“In the current context of the country, Khaleda Zia’s presence and homecoming carry profound significance. We believe her return will strengthen the movement to reinstate democratic values,” Fakhrul told reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Speaking to journalists in the morning, the BNP leader expressed hope that Khaleda’s reappearance in the political landscape would foster national unity and pave the way for a more inclusive, discrimination-free society.

Khaleda Zia returned to Dhaka on Monday after nearly four months in London, where she underwent advanced medical treatment. She was accompanied by her two daughters-in-law, including Dr Zubaida Rahman, wife of BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman.

The special air ambulance—provided by Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani—departed Heathrow Airport at 9:35 pm BST on Monday and landed in Dhaka at 10:42 am on Tuesday, following a brief stopover in Qatar.

Fakhrul, along with senior BNP leaders, arrived at the airport around 8:40 am to receive their party chief.

Describing her ordeal, Fakhrul said Khaleda had suffered years of “fascist repression” before being granted permission to travel abroad for treatment. “After enduring relentless persecution, she was finally allowed to seek medical care. Today, her return signals hope and joy for our party and the nation.”

Upon arrival, Khaleda Zia was escorted to her Gulshan residence, ‘Firoza,’ where heavy security was deployed. Armed forces and law enforcement agencies ensured tight security, restricting traffic and pedestrian movement near the area.

Thousands of BNP supporters and activists gathered early Tuesday morning along the 10-kilometre route from the airport to Gulshan Avenue, waving national and party flags in a show of loyalty and celebration.

Khaleda had departed for London on 8 January aboard the Qatari royal air ambulance. Upon arrival, she was admitted to the London Clinic and treated by leading specialists Professor Patrick Kennedy and Professor Jennifer Cross. On January 25, she was transferred to the residence of her elder son Tarique Rahman for continued care.

Reflecting on her return, Fakhrul said the nation now has an opportunity to chart a new course toward democratic reform. “Her return brings with it the promise of a new, more democratic Bangladesh,” he said.

In a separate comment, Fakhrul also assured the media that the BNP will always support and stand by journalists in their pursuit of truth and justice.
