The Economic Relations Division (ERD), Bangladesh Election Commission (EC), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on Wednesday launched a three-year initiative titled the BALLOT Project, aimed at supporting inclusive, transparent, and peaceful elections during a crucial political transition in Bangladesh.
The agreement was signed at the ERD office in Dhaka by Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary of ERD; Akhtar Ahmed, Senior Secretary of the Bangladesh Election Commission; and Stefan Liller, Resident Representative of UNDP Bangladesh. UN Wing Chief KAM Sohel, Additional Secretary, along with representatives from UN Women, UNESCO, and other senior officials, were present.
The BALLOT Project (2025–2027) seeks to strengthen the institutional capacity of the Election Commission, promote civic engagement and voter education, support legal and electoral reforms, and provide safeguards against electoral violence and misinformation.
Md Shahriar Kader Siddiky said, “We welcome this partnership with UNDP at a critical time in Bangladesh’s democratic journey. ERD is committed to coordinating national institutions and development partners to ensure the project’s success in safeguarding electoral integrity.”
Akhtar Ahmed noted, “The BALLOT Project provides the technical and institutional support we need to ensure elections that are inclusive, credible, and trusted by all.”
UNDP’s Stefan Liller added, “This is more than technical assistance—it’s about building trust in the process, empowering voters, and reinforcing institutions. Free and fair elections are fundamental to lasting peace and democratic stability.”
The project will be rolled out in two phases. The first focuses on immediate electoral support, including technical preparations and outreach to voters. The second phase will concentrate on long-term institutional reform and resilience-building beyond the next election cycle.
Implemented in collaboration with the EC, UN Women, UNESCO, and civil society organisations, the BALLOT Project is a strategic step towards strengthening democratic governance and promoting inclusive participation in Bangladesh.
