Khaleda Zia Hopes Democracy Will Soon Be Restored
BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia virtually addressed a discussion in Dhaka marking the 44th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman.
BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has expressed optimism that democracy will soon be restored in Bangladesh.
Speaking virtually at a discussion commemorating the 44th martyrdom anniversary of Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, held at the Institution of Engineers, Bangladesh (IEB) in Dhaka, she said, “Ziaur Rahman sacrificed his life to establish democracy and safeguard the country’s independence and sovereignty. Yet democracy still faces many obstacles. I believe its restoration is near.”
Khaleda Zia urged party leaders and activists to honour Ziaur Rahman’s legacy by adopting democratic methods to address national issues.
Recalling the day of Ziaur Rahman’s assassination as a painful memory for her family and the nation, she said, “This day brings sorrow not only to our family but to the entire country, which felt like a guardianless state.”
Describing Ziaur Rahman as an inseparable figure in Bangladesh’s history, she highlighted his role in proclaiming independence from Chattogram and becoming a martyr as a successful, honest, and patriotic leader.
She also praised his contributions to democracy, press freedom, judicial independence, and the ideology of Bangladeshi nationalism.
Concluding her remarks, Khaleda Zia prayed for the eternal peace of Ziaur Rahman’s soul.
