“There is a national yearning for transparent and unbiased elections. We have consistently voiced our demands in line with the will of the people,” he said.
Ahmed made the statement on Thursday while speaking as the chief guest at a programme held near the Mazar gate of the High Court in the capital. The event, organized by Shahbagh Thana BNP under Dhaka Metropolitan South, marked the 44th martyrdom anniversary of the party’s founder, former President Ziaur Rahman. As part of the commemoration, food was distributed among the underprivileged.
Paying tribute to Ziaur Rahman, Salahuddin described the late president as “a living embodiment of Bangladesh’s history.”
“Ziaur Rahman was born to fight for the nation’s independence. He was martyred while protecting that very independence,” he said. “He introduced multi-party democracy and established the Judicial Council to ensure judicial independence.”
Ahmed alleged that Ziaur Rahman was assassinated through a well-orchestrated conspiracy to derail democracy and impede the nation’s progress.
Calling for national unity, he urged BNP supporters and the broader public to channel their grief into strength.
“We must transform this sorrow into a force that drives us to restore democratic values and lay a constitutional foundation for the nation’s future,” he said.
The programme was also attended by Supreme Court Bar Association President Barrister Mahbub Uddin Khokon, Nationalist Lawyers’ Forum Secretary General Barrister Kaiser Kamal, and leaders and activists from various BNP-affiliated organizations.
