Dhaka, June 16 - Gonoforum President and former MP Mostafa Mohsin Montu was laid to eternal rest at Banani graveyard on Monday.

A guard of honour was given to the freedom fighter at Central Shaheed Minar.

Montu passed away while undergoing treatment at a city hospital on Sunday at the age of 81.

Montu, one of the organisers of the Liberation War, breathed his last at Square Hospital at around 5pm on Sunday.

The first namaz-e-janaza was held at a mosque in Elephant Road and his second namaz-e-janaza was held in Keraniganj.

Later, his body was taken to the Central Mosque of Dhaka University where a third namaz-e-janaza was held there.

People from all walks of life including BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, veterran politician Dr Kamal Hossain and other political leaders paid their last tribute to the freedom fighter.

General Secretary of Gonoforum, Mizanur Rahman Mizan, on behalf of the party, paid tribute to Montu.

After paying tribute, Mirza Fakhrul said, “He never compromised on principles. He worked to establish democracy, forming the Oikya Front to unite pro-democracy people.”

Later, he was buried at Banani graveyard near the grave of his mother and brother at around 5 pm.

Montu had been involved in Awami League politics since his student life and was elected president of the Jubo League, the party’s youth wing. He also served as the general secretary of the Awami League’s Dhaka city unit. He was later expelled from Awami League.

He played a significant role in the historic 1969 mass uprising and the 1990 anti-autocracy movement.

In 1986, he was elected MP from Dhaka-3 as an Awami League candidate. He contested from the same seat again in the 1991 parliamentary election but was defeated.

After being expelled from the Awami League in 1992, Montu joined Gonoforum in 1993, the year it was founded by Dr Kamal. - UNB
