BNP’s acting chairman Tarique Rahman is expected to return to Bangladesh within the next few weeks, standing committee member Dr AZM Zahid Hossain said on Saturday.

Addressing a programme at the National Press Club, Zahid announced that Tarique would lead the party from within the country well ahead of the upcoming national elections.

“Those conspiring to disrupt the polls will not succeed. The election will be held in February,” he declared.

He alleged that a “fallen autocrat” was attempting to snatch people’s rights through the back door and warned that forces opposed to the nation’s independence and sovereignty were engaged in fresh plots.

Rejecting what he described as the “PR method” as an unlawful demand, Zahid stated: “The constitution cannot be thrown into the dustbin at will. We must understand and respect the aspirations of the people without being emotional.”
