Attorney General Md Asaduzzaman has announced that he will contest in the upcoming national election, confirming that he will resign from his constitutional post ahead of joining the electoral race.

He made the remarks on Wednesday after concluding a hearing on a petition regarding the annulment of the caretaker government system. Speaking to reporters, he said, “I have sought nomination from the BNP. I will contest the election and will step down from the post of Attorney General at the appropriate time.”

According to information obtained from political sources, Md Asaduzzaman is expected to seek nomination for the Jhenidah-1 constituency, which covers Shailkupa upazila.

His decision marks a significant shift as the Attorney General is traditionally seen as a non-political, state-appointed legal adviser and chief representative of the government before the Supreme Court. By choosing to enter electoral politics, he will be required to formally resign from his position to ensure neutrality and avoid conflict of interest.

The development has sparked discussion in legal and political circles, as the Attorney General plays a key role in representing the state in major constitutional and criminal matters. Political observers suggest that his entry into electoral politics may influence local dynamics in Jhenidah, where party competition is expected to be intense in the upcoming polls.

Further announcements regarding his resignation timeline and formal nomination are expected soon.
