Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami has named Krishna Nandi, president of the party's Hindu Committee in Dumuria upazila, as its candidate for the Khulna-1 (Dakope-Batiaghata) constituency, replacing the previously declared nominee for the upcoming national election.

This marks the first time Jamaat has nominated a Hindu candidate for parliament.

Earlier, Jamaat Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman announced the decision at the eight-party divisional rally in Khulna on December 1.

The matter was reviewed at a meeting of local leaders this afternoon and the Ameer's decision was unanimously upheld, Khulna district Jamaat Ameer Maulana Emran Hossain told reporters in the evening.

Confirming the matter, Krishna Nandi said he had now been formally endorsed. "The Ameer announced my nomination on December 1, and the local board finalized it today. I will begin campaigning soon," he said.

Former nominee Maulana Abu Yusuf said he had already started campaigning for Nandi.

Jamaat had earlier announced its candidates for six constituencies in Khulna on February 9. With today's change, only the Khulna-1 nomination has been altered, reports BSS.
