Khaleda Zia’s Health Improving Slowly, Recovery Remains Fragile

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia’s health is showing gradual improvement, but recovery remains slow, a member of her medical board said on 8 December.

“While there are signs of progress, the improvement is limited, and recovery will take time due to her age and multiple long-standing health complications,” the medical board member explained. He added that as one complication stabilises, another often arises.

Although her chronic liver issues are currently under control, deteriorating kidney function remains a major concern. She continues to require regular dialysis, and her condition worsens whenever dialysis is paused, the doctor noted.

Due to her fragile state, the medical team has ruled out sending her abroad for advanced treatment until her condition becomes more stable.

Daily tests have been conducted since her admission to the CCU. While her vital signs are stable and not worsening, she is still far from risk-free, the board member said.

“She is receiving advanced treatment in the CCU, and the board meets every night to review her condition. Specialists monitor all reports closely, adjusting medications as needed—sometimes stopping a drug, resuming it later, or modifying the dosage,” he added.

Khaleda Zia’s daughter-in-law, Dr Zubaida Rahman, has also been attending the board meetings in person following her return home.
