Tarique’s Flight Lands in Sylhet; Crowds Build at 300 Feet

Bangladesh Nationalist Party acting chairman Tarique Rahman is returning home after 17 years, travelling from London to Bangladesh on a Biman Bangladesh Airlines flight.

Live flight tracking shows the aircraft has entered Bangladesh airspace and made its scheduled stopover in Sylhet before continuing to Dhaka. The Boeing 787 flight is due to land at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 11:45am today.

Tarique Rahman is travelling with his wife, Dr Zubaida Rahman, and their daughter, Zaima Rahman. Family members and aides are also believed to be on board.

His return marks his first visit to Bangladesh since leaving for the United Kingdom in 2008 following political upheaval. The homecoming comes at a significant moment in national politics, ahead of the upcoming general election, after the resolution of long-standing legal issues.

Meanwhile, large crowds of BNP leaders, activists and supporters have gathered at the 300 Feet area in Purbachal, where a reception has been arranged. Since yesterday, people from different parts of the country have been arriving, and the area has gradually turned into a massive gathering under heightened security arrangements.

After his arrival in Dhaka, Tarique Rahman is expected to proceed according to a pre-set programme amid tight security.
