Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed deep sorrow at the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, three-time former Prime Minister, symbol of Bangladesh’s democratic movement, and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).
In a condolence message, Yunus said that with her death, the nation has lost a great guardian. “I am deeply shocked and saddened by her passing,” he said.
He added that Khaleda Zia was not merely a political leader but a significant chapter in the nation’s history. Recognizing her contributions and decades-long political struggle, the government had declared her a Very Important Person (VIP) earlier this month.
“Her role in the struggle for democracy, the promotion of multi-party political culture, and the protection of people’s rights will be remembered forever,” Yunus said. “Through her uncompromising leadership, the nation was repeatedly freed from undemocratic situations and inspired to reclaim democracy.”
Despite political differences, her long journey devoted to national welfare, people-oriented leadership, and resolute determination provided guidance for the country, he added. With her death, Bangladesh has lost an experienced and tested stateswoman.
Yunus also noted that Khaleda Zia, the first woman Prime Minister of Bangladesh, led the struggle to restore democracy against autocratic rule and shaped the political landscape for decades.
Earlier on Tuesday at 6:00am, Begum Khaleda Zia passed away at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka. She was 80 years old.
