The European Union has expressed support for the reform initiatives undertaken by Bangladesh’s interim government, saying it is closely monitoring the reform process.

EU Ambassador to Bangladesh Michael Miller made the remarks during a meeting with the Chief Adviser’s Special Assistant, Professor Ali Riaz, at the Chief Adviser’s Office in the capital on Tuesday.

During the meeting, the ambassador reiterated the European Union’s backing for the government’s reform efforts ahead of the upcoming referendum and the 13th National Parliamentary Election.

“As part of our engagement in monitoring elections in Bangladesh, a large European Union Election Observation Mission will be deployed,” Ambassador Miller said, adding that an advance team has already arrived in the country.

He also expressed optimism that the longstanding and strong relations between Bangladesh and the European Union would continue in the days ahead.

Professor Ali Riaz briefed the ambassador on preparations and activities related to the forthcoming referendum and thanked the European Union for its continued support for Bangladesh’s referendum process and democratic transition.
