BNP's absolute victory is obvious if fair election is held: Mahdi

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Central Election Steering Committee spokesman and BNP Chairman’s adviser Mahdi Amin today said a mass surge has been created across the country in favour of the ‘Paddy Sheaf’ and that is why BNP's absolute victory is inevitable if a free fair and acceptable election is held.

He said the election campaign was scheduled from January 22 to 7:30 am today.

During the period, he said, continuous reports from local and international media, surveys of various reliable organisations and spontaneous and huge presence of people at BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman's election rallies and the reality on the ground have made it clear that BNP remains at the highest level in terms of public support.

Mahdi Amin made the remarks at a press conference at the BNP Election Steering Committee office in Gulshan here this morning.

He said a certain party is continuously spreading propaganda against BNP, while it is hinting of violent politics, misusing religion for political gain and even preparing for fake votes.

Taking such tactics standing against power of public opinion is an instance of their political bankruptcy, he said.

The BNP spokesman said: “One party is running an election campaign capitalising on its so-called stance against corruption. They are luring people, even children, with money in that campaign, which is a gross violation of the electoral code of conduct.”

This violation of the electoral code of conduct is a proof of alienation from the people and political bankruptcy, he said.

Mahdi Amin said if those, who always make statements of honesty, stance against corruption and create narratives of insaf (justice), try to buy votes with money in the election field, it is very shameful.

A video of the party openly giving money and trying to buy votes has already gone viral across the country and generated huge criticism, he said.

He said: "If the party that constantly speaks against corruption wants to buy people's votes nationwide, including the party chief's constituency, through graft and circulating money and other means, what a great hypocrisy and violation of morality could there be?"

Presenting the Rule-4 of the electoral code of conduct, he said no political party or candidate or any other person or organisation, during the pre-election period, can publicly or secretly provide or promise to provide any kind of donation or gift to any person or group residing in the constituency of any candidate.

Referring to the rule-27 of the Code of Conduct, 2025, he said it is a punishable offense.

Mahdi Amin called for taking legal action as soon as possible to this end, drawing the attention of the EC and the Returning Officers.

The BNP chairman’s adviser said similarly, they have seen that a candidate of that party in Khulna-1 constituency is distributing money among the voters with his own hands, which has already been reported in various media outlets.

Thus, sensing their certain defeat, the party has taken up a plan to buy votes with money across the country, he said.

He said the certain party has taken the initiative to implement their evil intentions by going door to door collecting voters’ IDs, bKash, Nagad and Rocket numbers.

In addition, he alleged that in Thaltamajh village number 4 of Nandigram upazila in Bogura-4 constituency, the local BNP leaders were attacked by convicted and identified terrorist activists of that party on Monday night, while many were seriously injured and their houses were vandalised and looted.

Mahdi Amin sought immediate intervention of the local administration, including returning officers and law enforcement agencies into the incidents, reports BSS.
