Jamaat offers full cooperation if govt seeks support: Dr Shafiqur

“If the government wants, Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami will assist in every sphere for the welfare of the country and its people,” he told reporters after a views-exchange meeting with the party’s newly elected Members of Parliament at Al-Falah Auditorium in the capital’s Moghbazar area.

Shafiqur said the party was committed to constructive politics and responsible parliamentary engagement, expressing hope that cooperation between the government and opposition would help strengthen democratic institutions.

Referring to previous elections, he said voting rights had not always been ensured in the country’s democratic journey and many citizens had been deprived of casting ballots. “This time, people have been able to exercise their voting rights. We will strive to fulfil the expectations with which they have elected us,” he said.

He urged citizens to remain engaged and assured them of the party’s continued presence. “In times of happiness and hardship, we will remain by your side,” he said.

The Jamaat chief said a “new chapter” would begin with the oath-taking ceremony of lawmakers, adding that accountability and responsible conduct would be essential to overcoming future challenges.

Highlighting the significance of the July mass uprising, he said the party would uphold what he described as the spirit of that movement, recalling the sacrifices made during the period. “The aspirations for which people shed blood in July will be upheld in Parliament,” he said.

Shafiqur also expressed hope that raising public concerns in Parliament would make democracy more vibrant.

Several senior party leaders, including Nayeb-e-Ameer ATM Azharul Islam and Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar, were present at the meeting along with newly elected lawmakers.
