Payra thermal Power Plant is set to resume generation after closure for coal shortage

Patuakhali: Finally, MV Athena, carrying 41 thousand 207 metric tons of coal for the Payra 1320 MW thermal power plant, has reached the first terminal of the Payra Sea Port. The power plant will be fully operational from June 25 after the completion of coal evacuation on Saturday.

The Deputy Director (Traffic) of Payra Port Authority has confirmed that the coal-bearing ship will anchor at the port's inner anchor this afternoon.

Earlier on June 17, the ship left Indonesia's Balik Panan port for Payra port. The 10 meter deep coaling vessel is 200 meters long and 32.26 meters wide.

Harbor Pilot Yakub Alam of Payra Port Authority left for Outer at night when the ship came near the fairway buoy of Payra Port on Thursday night. On Friday he took the ship to Payra port. The ship is currently a few kilometers away from Payra port.

Besides, another ship named MV Pavo Brave with 36 thousand 570 metric tons of coal is scheduled to arrive at the port on July 1.

Port Authority Deputy Director (Traffic) Md. Azizur Rahman said that even though Payra port is the deepest channel in the country, the 10-meter deep ship cannot directly enter the jetty of the thermal power plant. Because the depth of the jetty channel of the thermal power plant is 8 and a half to 9 meters. For this reason, after unloading five to seven thousand metric tons of coal through the lighter ship, the ship will be transported to the jetty of the thermal power station through Rabnabad channel of Payra port. Coal unloading from ships to thermal power plants may start tomorrow Saturday.

It is to be noted that due to lack of coal on June 5, Payra thermal power station's electricity production was completely stopped. - Gofran Biswas Palash
