Nagar Bhaban gates were locked by Ishraque supporters on Saturday disrupting services. UNB
To The Editor,
I am writing to urge the government to promptly clarify its stance on the recent court ruling regarding the mayoral position of Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC). The court has declared Mr. Ishraque Ahmed the rightful elected mayor, overturning the previous election verdict in which Sheikh Fazle Noor Taposh was declared the winner. This decision demands immediate action from the government to ensure a smooth transition of power and the uninterrupted functioning of municipal services.
Since Saturday, supporters of Mr. Ahmed have been laying siege to Nagar Bhaban, pressing for the official transfer of mayoral authority. This prolonged uncertainty is disrupting essential services at the corporation’s head office and creating unnecessary hardship for the public. The people of Dhaka deserve transparency and stability in their local governance.
If the government holds a different legal or administrative opinion on this matter, it is crucial that such a position be communicated to the public at the earliest. A prolonged silence will only deepen uncertainty, fuel unrest, and harm the credibility of governance. Whether affirming the court’s decision or presenting an alternative legal interpretation, the government’s response must be clear, decisive, and swift.
I respectfully urge the authorities to publicly address this matter, either by facilitating the immediate transition of mayoral power or by clarifying any differing stance they may have. Such an announcement will bring much-needed resolution and ensure the smooth functioning of Dhaka South City Corporation.
Your timely action in this regard will be deeply appreciated by all concerned citizens.
Sincerely,
Mahmud Hasan
