Cautionary signal No 3

Dear Madam/Sir,

I am writing to bring attention to the increasing vulnerability of Bangladesh’s coastal communities due to depression-induced heavy rainfall and tidal waves. The recent inundation of aquaculture farms and standing crops in Satkhira, the tragic loss of spotted deer in the Sundarbans, and the flooding of habitats in Nijhum Dwip, Cox’s Bazar, paint a grim picture of the devastation caused by such disasters.

This crisis is further exacerbated by the ongoing challenge of climate change and rising sea levels. Coastal cities like Patuakhali are now regularly submerged by tidal waves, while floodwaters reach deep into Chattogram port city, disrupting normal life. The frequency and severity of such incidents highlight the urgent need for stronger coastal embankments.

A well-maintained and fortified embankment system would act as a critical barrier against these rising waters, protecting communities, agriculture, and biodiversity from destruction. Bangladesh is on the frontline of climate change, and proactive measures—such as investing in resilient infrastructure—must be prioritized to safeguard both human and wildlife populations.

I urge policymakers, environmental experts, and local authorities to recognize this pressing issue and take decisive action to reinforce coastal defenses before the next disaster strikes. Strengthening embankments is not just a temporary fix but a necessary step toward ensuring long-term protection for our vulnerable coastal regions.

Sincerely,

Motahar Hossain
