Kylian Mbappe scored the decisive goal as France edged Paraguay 1-0 in sweltering conditions early Sunday to book a place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The France captain converted a second-half penalty at Philadelphia's Lincoln Financial Field, sending Les Bleus into the last eight for the fourth consecutive World Cup.

With temperatures nearing 38 degrees Celsius, both sides struggled to maintain their usual intensity. Paraguay remained disciplined defensively and frustrated France for much of the contest before the breakthrough came in the 70th minute.

The penalty was awarded after a video review determined that Diego Gomez had committed a foul inside the box. Mbappe calmly dispatched the spot-kick, scoring what proved to be the match winner.

The goal was Mbappe's 19th in World Cup competition, leaving him just one behind the tournament record held by Lionel Messi. The strike also moved him level at the top of the race for the tournament's Golden Boot with seven goals.

Paraguay goalkeeper Orlando Gill delivered another impressive performance, making several key saves to keep his team in the contest. He denied Manu Koné before producing two more saves from Mbappe during stoppage time.

The fiercely contested encounter featured several heated moments, and tempers briefly flared after the final whistle following an exchange between Gill and Mbappe before the situation was brought under control.

France coach Didier Deschamps praised his players for overcoming a stubborn opponent after a series of convincing victories earlier in the tournament.

France, champions in 2018 and runners-up in 2022, have now won all five of their matches at the 2026 World Cup, scoring 14 goals while conceding only two.

The victory sets up a quarter-final meeting with Morocco on Thursday in Foxborough. France defeated Morocco in the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup on their way to the final.

Paraguay bowed out of the tournament with another spirited display after earlier producing one of the competition's biggest upsets by eliminating Germany in the knockout stage.
