Rohingya refugees
Little global attention has been paid to the experience of Rohingya refugees in India— and even less to the hundreds of Rohingya refugees who are arbitrarily and indefinitely detained there. But the Rohingya have become one of the most neglected and persecuted groups within India’s refugee populations, largely due to the decade-long Modi government’s Islamophobic rhetoric and anti-immigrant policies.
From May to November 2024, The Azadi Project and Refugees International conducted research on Rohingya refugees in detention in India, finding a serious pattern of abuses. Families, including children, are separated. Most are detained even after they have served their sentences. Some were at the time of their detention and have never experienced life outside a detention center.
A new report out today from The Azadi Project and Refugees International details these abuses and provides concrete recommendations for the Indian government and its international partners to improve the situations. – Refugees International
